Cryotherapy for Prostate Cancer

What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy, or Cryocare (Targeted CryoAblation of the Prostate), is a minimally invasive treatment that uses extreme cold to destroy prostate cancer cells. It is particularly suitable for patients seeking an alternative to surgery or radiation, or for those in whom cancer has returned after initial treatment.

How Cryocare Works

his procedure uses Endocare’s Cryocare CS system, which is FDA-cleared and designed for precision and safety.

Key features include:

  • AutoFreeze: A computer-controlled freezing mechanism that adjusts power based on feedback from internal temperature sensors.
  • Integrated Ultrasound: Provides live imaging of the prostate for better control and accuracy during the procedure.
  • CryoGuide Planning Software: Assists the surgeon in targeting specific cancerous areas or treating the entire gland.
  • Urethral Warmer: Protects the urethra during the freezing process.

CryoGrid and Cryoprobes: A brachytherapy-like grid and vacuum-insulated probes to ensure accurate probe placement and efficient ice formation.

Salvage Cryotherapy

Salvage cryotherapy is offered when prostate cancer recurs after primary radiotherapy or brachytherapy. This specialised form of treatment requires significant expertise.

Mr Chinegwundoh is one of very few accredited UK practitioners offering this service. He has over seven years’ experience in delivering cryotherapy, and his data on salvage cases was published in 2011, highlighting his early and ongoing commitment to advancing this field.
